This Handbook is a service document that reflects the experience of AA shared in the General Service Office. Handbooks are compiled from the practical experience of AA members in various areas of service. They also reflect the guidance found in the Twelve Traditions and the General Service Conference (U.S. and Canada).
Accessibility issues affect all alcoholics who have difficulty participating in Alcoholics Anonymous. Throughout the Fellowship, AA members have discovered that the shared bond of recovery helps overcome these issues, as well as any other barriers and circumstances.
An AA telephone answering service provides local access to Alcoholics Anonymous through the phone book or the internet. The telephone answering service receives calls from people seeking help and can refer these people to a nearby AA group or a Twelfth Step contact.
The Alcoholics Anonymous movement and Al-Anon Family Groups maintain close ties. They are naturally drawn to each other because of their close relationship. However, the Twelve Traditions, Councils, and General Service Conferences of each organization suggest that each will function best if it remains "independent," while collaborating with the other.
